As we age most people lose the youthful volume in the mid-face region. In addition many of our face and neck lift patients are concerned about the definition of the jaw line, or excess neck tissue visible as fullness, vertical bands, or a blunt angle below the jaw. The appearance of wrinkles or deep lines close to your eyelids or around the mouth, or a sinking forehead or brow may also be evident and these problems can all be successfully corrected with a face and neck lift medically known as a rhytidectomy.
Our face and neck lift operation is specially customized for each and every patient using the latest facial rejuvenation and face and neck lift techniques which involve much more than simply tightening the skin and deep tissue. Our face and neck lifts are a comprehensive facial strategy designed specifically to recreate a youthful appearance to your face and neck.
Our face and neck lift creates minimal scaring and may use some or all of the best plastic surgery procedures including skin resurfacing, targeted liposuction, volumetric restoration such as fat injection, laser, a TCA peel and other complimentary surgical procedures if appropriate for you.
Dr Barnouti has a detailed knowledge of the facial anatomy, combined with a wide experience of plastic surgery and in depth knowledge of the latest techniques and technologies in plastic surgery. This allows him to create a fully individualised approach to the face and neck lift and achieve superior results. Our face and neck lifts are based on the importance of shifting facial volumes rather than old-fashioned face lift techniques that just pull back the skin because restoring facial volumes is more important than the amount of skin which is surgically removed, the skin tension on the and superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS).
The face and neck lift is one of the most technically demanding procedures in plastic surgery and Dr Barnouti takes pride in specialising in a 21st century approach to face and neck lifts, rejuvenation and facial recontouring plastic surgery. By Laith Barnouti
What will happen during my face and neck lift consultation?
We encourage you to bring your partner, a family member or friend to your initial face and neck lift consultation if you would like their support.
During your face and neck lift consultation our qualified and experienced Sydney-based plastic surgeon Dr Barnouti will take your full medical history, examine you and discuss your goals and lifestyle in detail to see if you are a suitable candidate for face and neck lift plastic surgery.
At Sydney Plastic Surgery, we recommend you bring photos of yourself to your face and neck lift consultation to allow Dr Barnouti to determine the volume and shape needed to restore a healthy, youthful appearance to your face. If you can find photos of yourself aged 20-30 years of age and preferably not smiling that would help with his assessment.
When considering your face and neck lift Dr Barnouti will assess your current facial balance including skin quality, appearance and position of facial lines and facial bone structure. He considers this meticulous analysis of the patient’s facial form to be one of the most interesting and complex aspects of plastic surgery.
Dr Barnouti will discuss all your concerns and thoroughly explain the face and neck lift options for you. The face and neck lift consultation will inform and educate you about the various options. One of the most important issues in facial surgery is to establish patient’s expectations, and distinguish between facial rejuvenation and facial recontouring.
During your consultation Dr Barnouti will explain the options for your face and neck lift including facial mini face lift, laser surgery, chemical peels, dermabrasion, liposuction, lipofilling, soft treatments or a combined synergistic approach.
Can you explain the difference between facial rejuvenation and facial recontouring?
Facial rejuvenation is for patients who just want to look 10-15 years younger than they are now. This is the case for most face and neck lift patients. Facial recontouring creates significant facial changes and is not commonly requested. If this type of plastic surgery is of interest you can find out more during your face and neck lift consultation and explain your wishes to Dr Barnouti so he can plan the right surgery.
What are the different types of face lifts?
There are four types of facelift so if you’re not sure which is right for you that can be discussed during your face lift consultation. The four types of face lift are:
Mini face lift – Sometimes called a Hollywood facelift this involves a small incision in the hairline only. Recovery time is two to five days and the resulting scar will be hidden above the hairline.
Short Scar face lift – Also known as an S lift or MACS lift. The incision is made at the junction of the ear and the side of the cheek but finishes at the earlobe and does not extend behind the ear. The recovery time is five to eight days and there will be no scar behind the ear.
Full face lift – Also known as an SMAS face and neck lift. The incision is at the junction of the ear and cheek and behind the ear creating what is known as an omega scar. This is a longer and more expensive procedure with a recovery time of eight to fourteen days.
Total facial rejuvenation – This includes a face lift, neck lift, fat transfer, brow lift, skin resurfacing, lower blepharoplasty, and upper blepharoplasty.
What happens during face or face and neck lift surgery plastic surgery?
A face lift can be performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic and takes Between 90 minutes and six hours depend on the extent of the face lift, rejuvenation or contouring procedure.
With most face lifts after making the incision the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or liposuctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour of the face. The surgeon then tightens the underlying muscle and membrane. Volume is usually added to certain areas such as the cheek bone for enhancement.
Other complimentary procedures may also be undertaken with your agreement such as work on the tear troughs or eyelid and cheek enhancement surgery to produce the best possible results.
Finally, the incisions are closed using dissolvable stitches so you do not need to go through the inconvenience of removing them.
What are the other procedures I can get done at the same time as a face lift?
Eyelid surgery on the upper and/or lower eyelids, also known as blepharoplasty.
Neck lift, fat suction and recontouring.
Lip lift, augmentation, resurfacing or combination.
Tear trough procedure to decrease the appearance of a displeasing groove under the eyes.
Cheek bone enhancement with fat transfer or cheek implants
Smoothening the nasolabial folds and marionette lines which are sometimes called smile lines.
Nose reshaping or rhinoplasty.
Lipofilling, fat injection
What happens after face or face and neck lift plastic surgery?
If a general anaesthetic was used you’ll need to stay in hospital overnight. If only a local aesthetic and sedation were used then you can go home the same day as long as you have someone to look after you.
You will need to wear a bandage covering the treated area for 24 hours and you will be seen 5-7 days after surgery to make sure you are healing well and comfortable. The stiches are usually dissolvable so do not need to be taken out.
Temporary bruising under the eyes is common after a face lift and will go down slowly after the first week. To begin with your face will feel stiff and look artificially tightened. This will ease naturally can be helped by applying cold compresses to the affected areas.
How soon after my face lift will I be able to go back to work and resume normal activities?
You will need to rest completely for the first 48 hours after your face lift and avoid sudden head movements. Normal activity can be resumed in about five days after a mini face lift, eight days after a short scar face lift and fourteen days after a full face and neck lift.
