The ‘nose job’ or rhinoplasty is the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in our Sydney plastic surgery clinics.
Many rhinoplasty candidates come to us because they have been deeply unhappy with the appearance of their nose for years. Sometimes they were born with a large, crooked or hooked nose which dominates their face. Other people want to get a nose job because their nose has been broken or become misshaped after an accident.
The nose causes so much dissatisfaction because it’s right there in the middle of your face and there’s no way to hide it. If you’re displeased with another part of your body it can be relatively easy to hide or disguise. Many people in Sydney keep their hair long to cover prominent ears, both men and women are turning to control undergarments to disguise lumps and bulges and some people avoid our beautiful Sydney beaches completely because they don’t want to be seen in swimwear.
But it’s almost impossible to hide your nose and, as you’ll see in our rhinoplasty gallery, the nose can be reshaped and recontoured so that it suits your face.
Then there are also people who need nose jobs because their nasal passages are blocked and they have trouble breathing through their nose.
Let’s have a closer look at each of these groups of people bearing in mind that while there’s no such thing as a perfect nose there are often medical reasons for rhinoplasty and a simple nose job can give people a huge boost to their confidence and self-esteem.
1. Medical Reasons for Getting a Nose Job
You’ve probably heard of a deviated septum but may not know what it is unless you suffer from it yourself. A deviated septum is the medical name for a condition where the center cartilage of the nose is off-center. Typically, the condition is more pronounced on one side of the nose and can mean that people can only breathe through one nostril.
As well as making it difficult to breathe through the nose this condition can cause repeated and painful bouts of sinusitis or sinus infections, most often during the cold and flu season during our Sydney winters.
While many people are born with a deviated septum other people get a deviated septum after an accident or some other trauma. Having a deviated septum is very common and can be corrected through septoplasty but the procedure can only be performed on adults aged 18 or over when the septum has stopped growing.
Plastic Surgery Sydney sees excellent surgical outcomes after septoplasty and it’s one of the greatest part of my job to meet with nose job candidates after surgery. The most common comment from people is that they can’t believe how easy it is to breathe now. If you’ve had a deviated septum since birth you don’t know how easy normal breathing should be and it’s a pleasure to see people breathing easily for the first time.
Being able to breathe easily helps people sleep better, stop snoring and perform better in sport or exercise so although this surgery is invisible it makes a huge difference to people’s lives.
2. Damage to the Nose Which Rhinoplasty Can Repair
We lead an active and sporty life here in Sydney but all that surfing, rugby, netball and other pursuits can lead to broken noses. More adventurous Sydney residents may get out of town for mountain biking, climbing or winter sports and these are another common reason for broken noses.
Car accidents can also lead to a broken nose and many people come to our clinic to get that damage repaired.
If your nose has been damaged in an accident then it’s best to get rhinoplasty surgery to correct the damage as soon as possible. In particular, a broken nose is best treated within two weeks of the accident.
The funny thing is that, after being forced into rhinoplasty because they have a broken nose many patients like their new nose better than the old one.
3. Rhinoplasty for Cosmetic Reasons
Because your nose is right there in the middle of your face it gets noticed. While there’s no perfect nose some people find that their nose is too big or too small for their facial features. Other people wish to change the shape of their nose or get rid of bumps on the bridge of their nose or hooks at the end of the nose.
Some people come to us because they have already had rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results.
There are many different reasons why you might be thinking about getting a nose job but our main concern is to make you feel good about how you look in general and about the appearance of your nose in particular.
When you visit me for an initial consultation about a nose job I’ll be studying all your facial features so I can create a nose that compliments your face and doesn’t attract unwanted attention or distract from the rest of your face.
My prime concern is to make sure you have realistic expectations about surgery and look forward to finding out how we can help you with a nose job or any other plastic surgery procedure.
