GP Referral Requirements for Cosmetic Surgery: What You Need to Know
Since July 2023, the Medical Board of Australia has mandated that all patients seeking cosmetic surgery must first obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This requirement is a key part of the new safety reforms aimed at ensuring patients are well-informed and medically suitable before proceeding with invasive procedures.
The GP referral serves several critical purposes:
-
Medical Screening: Your GP, who knows your medical history best, can assess your physical health and any underlying conditions.
-
Psychological Assessment: It allows for a discussion regarding your motivations and mental health, ensuring you have realistic expectations.
-
Unbiased Advice: A GP provides a consultation independent of the surgical practice, offering a neutral perspective on the risks and benefits.
-
Patient Journey Support: This step ensures your regular doctor is aware of your surgical plans and can provide appropriate follow-up care if needed.
New Requirements for GP Referrals for Cosmetic Surgery Patients – Starting from 1st July 2023
A new requirement for GP referrals for cosmetic surgery patients will take effect from 1st July 2023. This policy applies to all patients seeking cosmetic surgery, regardless of their age or the type of cosmetic procedure they are undergoing.
Examples of cosmetic surgery procedures affected include breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, surgical face lifts, cosmetic genital surgery, liposuction and fat transfer.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as cosmetic injectables, laser, thread lifts, do not require a referral.
The purpose of the GP referral requirement is to ensure that patients have the opportunity to discuss their decision to undergo cosmetic surgery with their GP and to inform them of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure. The GP can also assess the patient’s mental health and determine their suitability for surgery.
The GP referral must be to a registered practitioner who works independently of the medical practitioner performing the procedure.
