Labiaplasty (Labia Reduction, labioplasty), Vaginal Tightening

With age and childbirth the labia and surrounding vaginal tissue, both external and internal, can change in shape, size and tone, and in numerous cases women are born or developed with large labia and they are just not happy with parts of their genitalia.

This type of surgery includes procedures to alter and improve the function and appearance of the female genitals. It is a relatively new field in aesthetic surgery, however along the later years this type of operation has become more popular. Many patients feel inhibited in their sexual relations and are also troubled by situations linked to swimming or sports.

Dr Barnouti, Sydney specialist plastic surgeon, performs hundreds of labioplasty and vaginoplasty every year that changes women’s life, a procedure that has high satisfaction rate:

1.    Operations of the labia: to alter irregularities in the appearance and reduced the size of the labia. It is called Labioplasty
2.    Operation of the Vagina: tightening surgery of the pelvic floor muscles and the vagina. It is known as Vaginoplasty

Labioplasty, labiaplasty, Labial Rejuvenation or labial reduction in Sydney by Dr Barnouti

Countless women are bothered by irregularities in the appearance of their labia. The most common irregularity is that the inner labia are too big. If these protrude far beyond the outer labia, there is a risk of chafing and they are also aesthetically less appealing. Surgery is required to reduce the size of the inner labia and improve on its shape.

The labiaplasty Consultation

A Medical history and examination to determine if the patient is suitable candidate for the procedure.
Female genitalia are generally concealed however larger than average labia may protrude well beyond the outer lips of the vagina causing discomfort when they rub against clothing, or during sports or sex. Women with extremely extensive or unequal lengths of the inner lips (labia minora) can have them aesthetically reshaped.

The labiaplasty Surgery in Sydney

Labial surgery is always performed as day case, generally under general or local aesthetic with sedation.

During the procedure Dr Barnouti removes a wedge-shaped piece of tissue and re-attaches the labium in a new position so that the inner lips no longer protrude beyond the outer lips.

The body dissolves the stitches used, so there is no requirement for unpleasant physical removal in this delicate area.

After labiaplasty Surgery

There is no requirement for bandages and it suffices to wash the area thoroughly with a hand-held shower twice a day.

A burning or unpleasant sensation may be present but in general there is no need for painkillers.

Personal hygiene is extremely important for rapid healing.

You will be able to return home the same day.

The wound area will be reviewed in the clinic in a week’s time

Getting you back to work and normal duties, recovery after labiaplasty

Recovery is usually quick and easy.

Loose underwear should be worn for the first 2 weeks.

Four weeks later, sexual relations can be resumed, while exercising certain caution.

Vaginal Tightening (perineoraphy), vaginal surgery, Vaginoplasty in Sydney

The most common reason of an enlarged vagina is childbirth. Some women experience stretched pelvic floor muscles and vaginas after one or several births.

This can lead to incontinence and some women also feel that they have changed and become so stretched that it has a negative effect on their sex lives.

Post-menopausal women and those who have been treated for cervical cancer can find their vaginas have enlarged, and may seek assistance.

This procedure is designed to reconstruct the vaginal muscle producing tight vagina.

The Vaginoplasty Consultation

During the first consultation Dr Barnouti will discusses any urological and sexual problems.

The vagina and the pelvic floor muscles are assessed.

He must determine that you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

The vagina Surgery

In this procedure, which is usually completed under local anaesthesia with sedation as a day case, a section of vaginal lining is removed and the underlying muscles are repositioned in such a way that the outer third of the vagina is noticeably tighter. Sydney Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Dr Barnouti, will remove a wedge-shaped section of tissue from the wall of the vagina, the elastic tissue that is stretched and sometimes cut or torn through childbirth. Perineal/Pelvic floor muscles are then reconstructed and repaired. Finally Mucosa (lining of the vagina) is then rejoined with stitches.

Post-operative discomfort is minimal. This area normally heals well and the wound should settle within about 10 days.

After Vagina Surgery, Dr Barnouti's protocol

A sanitary dressing may be applied immediately after surgery, and every wound are sutured with dissolvable stitches. In the first week after surgery the area is likely to be swollen and bruised. Simple analgesics are more than enough to control the minimal discomfort that you may experience in the first 48hours after surgery.

What are the risks?

Fortunately complications with these procedures are very uncommon. They include: bleeding which normally stops spontaneously within 24 hours, infection that can typically be treated with antibiotics and lastly, opening of parts of the wound, which if it happens, will usually heal spontaneously. Fortunately these complications are very rare.

Getting you back to work and normal activities

We recommend that patients observe as much bed rest as possible during the first week after surgery. Personal hygiene is extremely important for rapid healing and twice-daily showering is essential. Loose underwear should be worn for the first 2 weeks. Tampons should not be used during the first4- 6 weeks.
Back to regular activities including penetrative sex in 6 weeks.

Other Genital Plastic Surgery

Various other procedures to improve the appearance, tone and sensation of the vagina can be performed.
