Breast Surgery FAQ

What are the general risks associated with breast surgery?2026-05-22T13:48:20+10:00

All invasive procedures carry inherent risks. General risks include infection, bleeding (haematoma), delayed wound healing, noticeable scarring, and adverse reactions to the anaesthetic. Breast-specific risks may include changes to nipple sensation, asymmetry, inability to breastfeed, and—in the case of implants—capsular contracture or implant rupture. All risks will be discussed extensively during your consultation.

Please read our Risks and Complications of Plastic Surgery page.

Are there Medicare rebates available for breast procedures?2026-05-22T13:45:37+10:00

Certain breast procedures, such as a breast reduction or the correction of severe asymmetry, may attract a Medicare rebate (approximately $600 to $750) if they meet strict medical criteria for reconstructive surgery. Meeting these criteria may also allow your private health fund to cover the hospital and theatre fees. Purely cosmetic procedures, such as standard breast augmentation, are not covered by Medicare.

Why do I need a GP referral before my consultation?2026-05-22T13:43:50+10:00

Under the April 2026 AHPRA guidelines, a GP referral is a mandatory requirement for all cosmetic surgery consultations in Australia. This ensures that an independent medical professional reviews your physical and psychological health before you see a surgeon. It also initiates a mandatory seven-day cooling-off period, ensuring you have ample time to make an informed, pressure-free decision.

What is the estimated cost of breast surgery in Sydney?2026-06-18T17:30:25+10:00

Surgical costs depend on the specific procedure required and your individual anatomy. Based on our current 2026 fee schedule:

  • Breast Augmentation: $10,990 – $11,990 (Includes surgeon, implants, anaesthetist, medical bra, and follow-up. Hospital/day surgery fees of approx. $3,000 apply).

  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy): $13,990 – $17,990 (Hospital fees of approx. $4,200 apply if private health rebates are not applicable).

  • Breast Reduction: $14,990 – $19,990 (Hospital fees of approx. $4,800 apply for uninsured patients).

  • Combined Breast Lift & Implant: $15,990 – $19,990. A precise, itemised quote will be provided after your clinical consultation.

Please refer to our costs page for a detailed breakdown of current costs.

Can I combine breast procedures with other surgeries?2026-04-24T13:25:03+10:00

Yes, combining breast procedures like lifts or reductions with tummy tucks and liposuction is common and safe for eligible patients, minimizing recovery time. A Mummy Makeover typically pairs breast work with abdominal contouring to restore post-pregnancy figures efficiently. Your surgeon assesses health and goals to customize safely.

How do I choose between a Breast Lift and a Breast Reduction?2026-04-24T10:30:36+10:00

A breast lift (mastopexy) primarily addresses sagging by reshaping and elevating the breasts while preserving their current size. Opt for this if ptosis is your main issue without discomfort from excess volume. Choose a breast reduction if overly large breasts cause back pain, shoulder grooves, or lifestyle limitations, as it removes tissue for smaller, lighter breasts alongside lifting.

Can I Get a Payment Plan for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery?2026-04-24T10:32:01+10:00

Sydney Plastic Surgery does not promote or advertise payment plans, in line with AHPRA’s Guidelines for Advertising Regulated Health Services.

However, patients seeking elective procedures such as breast augmentation or implants may explore personal financing options independently. Some individuals choose to fund their surgery through medical financing services or personal loans. While third-party cosmetic surgery finance providers are available online, we are not affiliated with, nor do we endorse, any specific provider, and we are unable to assist with applications.

Please note that Medicare and/or private health insurance may cover a portion of your procedure if the eligibility criteria are met.

Mandatory Surgical Warning

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Please read our Risks and Complications of Plastic Surgery page.

GP Referral & Assessment Requirements

In accordance with the latest April 2026 AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia regulations, all patients seeking a consultation for cosmetic surgery must obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This ensures your medical history is reviewed by an independent doctor who can discuss your motivations and goals before you meet with a specialist.

A mandatory seven-day cooling-off period applies after your initial consultation before surgery can be booked. Patients are also encouraged to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding. These requirements exist to protect patients and to ensure every decision is fully informed and free of pressure.
