Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases the size, restores volume, or refines the shape of the breasts using silicone or saline implants — or, in selected cases, the patient’s own fat. Women choose breast augmentation after pregnancy or significant weight loss, to correct asymmetry, or to achieve a fuller silhouette. Outcomes depend on the surgeon’s training, the technique chosen for the individual patient, and the clinical setting in which the surgery is performed.
At Sydney Plastic Surgery®, breast augmentation is performed by Dr Laith Barnouti — Specialist Plastic Surgeon FRACS (Plas), Senior Lecturer at the University of NSW, and author of Your Guide to Breast Surgery. With 25 years of surgical experience and fellowship training across Brazil, Sweden, Belgium, the United States and France, Dr Barnouti consults from clinics in Glebe, Chatswood and Parramatta, and operates at Hunters Hill Private, North Shore Specialist Day Hospital and Westmead Private hospitals.
What to Expect at Your Consultation
The first consultation is the foundation of every breast augmentation procedure performed by Dr Barnouti. You are welcome to bring a partner, family member or close friend. Decisions about surgery are personal, and a second set of ears can help you weigh information at your own pace.
The consultation begins with a discussion of your goals — what you hope breast augmentation will achieve, what concerns you, and what outcome you have in mind. Dr Barnouti will review your full medical history, including past surgeries, current medications, allergies, breastfeeding history, and any family history of breast disease. Honest answers protect you in surgery and shape the recommendations you receive.
A focused physical examination follows — measuring chest dimensions, assessing skin quality and existing breast tissue, and noting any asymmetry. These measurements determine which implant sizes, shapes and placement options are realistic for your anatomy. Dr Barnouti will explain the trade-offs of each option and recommend the combination he believes will give you the best long-term result.
You will also have the opportunity to handle implants of different sizes and profiles, trial sizers in a surgical bra, and review before-and-after photographs of patients with comparable starting anatomy. A written quote covering the surgical, anaesthetic, hospital and aftercare fees is provided after consultation.
Under April 2026 AHPRA regulations, a mandatory seven-day cooling-off period applies between consultation and booking surgery. This time is yours — to consider what was discussed, raise further questions, and seek a second opinion if you wish. There is no obligation to proceed.
Understanding Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammoplasty, increases breast size and adjusts shape. It addresses three common concerns: small breast size that has not changed with weight gain or pregnancy, loss of breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, and asymmetry between the two breasts. It does not lift sagging breasts on its own — patients with significant ptosis are usually advised to consider a breast lift, with or without an implant, depending on individual anatomy and goals.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital and typically takes one to two hours, depending on the technique and complexity. Most patients return home the same day or after one overnight stay.
Implant Options
Three types of implants are commonly used in Australia.
Silicone Gel Implants
The most widely used option in modern breast augmentation. Cohesive silicone gel feels close to natural breast tissue and holds its shape. Available in round and anatomical (teardrop) profiles, in a range of sizes and projections.
Saline Implants
Filled with sterile salt water after placement. The shell is silicone; the fill is saline. Saline implants tend to feel firmer than silicone gel, but in the rare event of a rupture, the body absorbs the saline harmlessly.
Fat Transfer (Autologous Fat Grafting)
Uses fat harvested from another area of the body — usually abdomen, flanks or thighs — and grafted into the breast. Fat transfer suits patients seeking a modest increase in size with no implant. Some volume reabsorbs in the months after surgery, and most patients require more than one session to reach their desired size.
Implant shape (round or anatomical), profile (low, moderate, or high — describing how far the implant projects from the chest wall), size (measured in cubic centimetres) and surface texture (smooth or textured) are decisions made together with your surgeon during consultation, based on your chest dimensions, existing breast tissue, lifestyle, and the result you want.
Surgical Approach
Two technical decisions shape the surgical plan: where the incision is made, and where the implant is placed.
Incision Options
- Inframammary — at the crease beneath the breast. Provides the surgeon with the most direct access and is the most commonly used incision worldwide.
- Periareolar — around the lower edge of the areola. The scar is camouflaged at the colour transition, which can suit patients with well-defined areolar borders.
- Transaxillary — through the armpit. Leaves no scar on the breast itself but is more technically demanding and not suitable for every implant type.
Implant Placement
- Subglandular — above the chest muscle, behind the breast tissue.
- Submuscular — beneath the pectoral muscle.
- Dual plane — partially behind the muscle and partially behind the gland. Now widely used because it combines the soft upper-pole appearance of submuscular placement with better lower-pole shape.
The right combination depends on your tissue thickness, body type, implant choice and lifestyle. Dr Barnouti will explain the options that suit your anatomy at consultation.

What Breast Augmentation Costs in Sydney
Breast augmentation at Sydney Plastic Surgery® starts from $10,990 to $11,990, depending on the implant type, surgical complexity and your individual case. The quoted fee covers the surgeon’s fee, the anaesthetist, accredited hospital costs, post-operative consultations, and the surgical garment used during recovery.
Medicare rebates and private health fund contributions are limited for cosmetic breast augmentation, but may apply where surgery has a documented reconstructive component (for example, asymmetry correction, congenital conditions such as tubular breast deformity, or following mastectomy). A quote specific to your case is provided after consultation.
Recovery Timeline
- Week 1 — Rest at home. Sponge bathing only. A surgical bra is worn continuously. Most patients are off prescription pain relief within a few days. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen for the first two weeks unless directed otherwise.
- Week 2 — Light activity around the house. The seven-day post-operative review confirms wound healing.
- Weeks 3 to 4 — Gentle return to walking and most non-strenuous daily activities. No lifting, no upper-body exercise, no driving while on any sedating medication.
- Week 6 — Sutures are dissolvable and do not require removal. The post-surgical bra continues until this point. Most patients return to gym training and sport in stages from week six.
- Final result — Implants settle and final shape becomes clear at around six weeks, with continued refinement over the following three to six months as swelling fully resolves.
Mandatory Surgical Warning
Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Please read our Risks and Complications of Plastic Surgery page.
GP Referral & Assessment Requirements
In accordance with the latest April 2026 AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia regulations, all patients seeking a consultation for cosmetic surgery must obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This ensures your medical history is reviewed by an independent doctor who can discuss your motivations and goals before you meet with a specialist.
A mandatory seven-day cooling-off period applies after your initial consultation before surgery can be booked. Patients are also encouraged to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding. These requirements exist to protect patients and to ensure every decision is fully informed and free of pressure.
