GP Referral

A new requirement for GP referrals for cosmetic surgery patients will take effect from 1st July 2023. This policy applies to all patients seeking cosmetic surgery, regardless of their age or the type of cosmetic procedure they are undergoing.

Examples of cosmetic surgery procedures affected include breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, surgical face lifts, cosmetic genital surgery, liposuction and fat transfer.

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as cosmetic injectables, laser, thread lifts, do not require a referral.

The purpose of the GP referral requirement is to ensure that patients have the opportunity to discuss their decision to undergo cosmetic surgery with their GP and to inform them of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure. The GP can also assess the patient’s mental health and determine their suitability for surgery.

The GP referral must be to a registered practitioner who works independently of the medical practitioner performing the procedure.
