Nipple & Areola Refinement
For many individuals, the appearance of the nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) can be a source of self-consciousness. Whether due to genetics, breastfeeding, or weight changes, concerns such as enlarged areolas, elongated nipples, or inverted nipples are common.
Dr Laith Barnouti offers specialised procedures in Sydney to resize, reshape, and correct these areas, often performed as standalone treatments under local anaesthetic or combined with other breast surgeries like a breast lift or reduction.
Procedure Summary
- Procedure Time: 45 – 90 minutes.
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia (standard) or sedation.
- Recovery: 1 week for light activities; 4-6 weeks for full exercise.
- Inpatient/Outpatient: Outpatient (Day procedure).
- Referral: GP referral is mandatory per AHPRA regulations.
Are You a Candidate?
You may be a candidate for nipple or areola surgery if you experience:
- Enlarged Areolas: Disproportionately wide areolas relative to the breast size.
- Protruding Nipples: Long or “pendulous” nipples that are visible through clothing.
- Inverted Nipples: Nipples that retract inward rather than pointing outward.
- Asymmetry: Significant differences in size or shape between the two sides.
Areola Reduction
Areola reduction reduces the diameter of the pigmented skin. It is frequently sought after pregnancy or by those with naturally large areolas.
- Technique: Usually involves a “donut” incision (periareolar) to remove a ring of skin, pulling the remaining skin tighter to create a smaller circle.
- Scarring: Minimal, hidden along the border of the new areola.
Nipple Reduction Surgery
This procedure addresses nipples that are too long or too wide.
- Technique: The surgeon removes a portion of the nipple tissue to reduce height or width while preserving sensation and, where possible, the ability to breastfeed.
- Experience: Performed quickly under local anaesthetic with immediate results.
Inverted Nipple Correction
Inverted nipples occur when the milk ducts are too short, pulling the nipple inward.
- Technique: The surgeon releases the tight tissue or ducts allowing the nipple to project naturally.
- Grades: Treatment varies depending on whether the nipple can be pulled out manually (Grade 1) or is permanently retracted (Grade 3).
Mandatory Surgical Warning
Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Please read our Risks and Complications of Plastic Surgery page.
GP Referral & Assessment Requirements
In accordance with the latest April 2026 AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia regulations, all patients seeking a consultation for cosmetic surgery must obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This ensures your medical history is reviewed by an independent doctor who can discuss your motivations and goals before you meet with a specialist.
A mandatory seven-day cooling-off period applies after your initial consultation before surgery can be booked. Patients are also encouraged to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding. These requirements exist to protect patients and to ensure every decision is fully informed and free of pressure.
